The term ‘Fattorie Didattiche’ indicates a special educational program for elementary and middle schools. This educational activity can been identified into three thematic areas:

    1) The crops:
Cultivation of olive trees, vegetables, fruit trees, garden and herbs, using biological and technical methods for the maintenance of the forests. The various stages of processing the soil; using machinery or manually, mowing, ploughing, soil fertilization using self-produced compost and manure. Sowing the seedbeds in horticultural crops with the techniques used by organic farmers, crop rotation, pruning of the olive grove and orchard, cleaning the forest, maintenance of the dry stonewalls and harvesting the olives. A small portion of land is available for students to create a small vegetable garden workshop to follow regularly.

    2) Knowledge of the natural environment:
The discovery of the natural environment, which is anthropic from a geographical point of view, geological, botanical and faunal, a walk around the grounds to determine the characteristic aspects of the climate, conformation and quality of the soil, the terracing method and determine the effectiveness of the vegetation for the consolidation of the land, the effects of the rain and the water flow in the streams. The different vegetation areas: the natural ones and those linked to the crops (the orchards and vineyards, olive groves, woods, the pastures and the watershed), the appearance of the natural, botanical environment, and the collection/categorization of the herbs according to their characteristics. The region with its architectural features, stone buildings, and leftover traces of man made work (the peasants and shepherds shelters, and the ancient transport systems in relation to the collection of hay).

    3) Environmental Compliance:
The recovery of rainwater for irrigation, heating techniques with firewood obtained from pruning, recycling of waste material and making craft items for daily use.

After the full day immersion around the agricultural estate, students will be able to self-produce crafted materials based on the experience gathered during the day. Contact us to evaluate which activities can be carried out throughout the year.
